About Our Program
Saint Mary Preschool is dedicated to providing an exciting, faith-based environment that
stimulates curiosity and a desire to learn within our students. The curriculum is centered
around themes that inspire children creatively, cognitively, and morally. Caring for each
other and the world God created is woven into our everyday activities.
The skills and concepts that we focus on are strengthened through developmentally
appropriate practices. Learning at the early childhood level is most successful for the wide
variety of learning styles when it involves direct interaction with materials and manipulation of
objects. This is how children learn about the world.
The classroom environment, therefore, is of primary importance. Special areas are
maintained in conjunction with the current theme in the following categories: Art, Library,
Tactile Table, Dramatic Play, Science, Manipulatives, Blocks, and Learning. Problem-solving
and independence are fostered as children move throughout these centers, exploring and
learning.
Parental involvement is key to any child's success in school, and at Saint Mary School, there
exist many special events that celebrate that interaction. Within our Preschool family, there
is a Parent Open House before school begins, a Thanksgiving Breakfast, Christmas
Sing-Along, Grandparent Valentine Day Social, Mother's Tea and a "Get Daddy Dirty Day" in
the Spring.
As the year progresses and the children become comfortable in the classroom,
we begin to enrich the program through use of some of the elementary school's
facilities. We will have small-group time in the computer lab, physical education
in the gym, and opportunity for quiet discussions in beautiful Saint Mary Church.
The Preschool has access to the large climbing structure in the playground as
well as a beautiful grassy field to run and play large group games on. As part of
our effort to promote an awareness of God in our everyday lives, group prayer
is part of our routine. And, since we are nurturing the physical as well as the
spiritual, snack is provided every day.
Many children are introduced to the concept of school at this age. Socialization skills are the
building blocks for success in all future endeavors, so that is a big focus. Using words to
express needs and feelings is a basic and necessary skill that children gain confidence in as
they utilize it. We ensure daily opportunity for that practice, and create role-play situations
and a warm, comfortable environment to explore it in.
Preparing for Kindergarten is the goal during this year of Preschool. We strive to build on
existing skills; taking each child on an individual basis, especially cognitively. Some of our
broader goals are to foster a positive self-concept, encourage art appreciation and
experimentation, promote pre-reading skills, and give ample practice for fine and gross motor
skills to be honed.
Kindness and respect between peers, self-help skills, creative thinking, and problem solving
are all part of the ongoing fours curriculum.
Registration begins in mid-January for the following school year. Two days are set aside
as the initial registration times. A rolling registration will continue after that for as long as
